THE WORLDS MOST ENVIROMENTLY FRIENDLY HOBBY
|

Firstly a metal detector cannot damage anything. The person useing it can. Anyone can buy a metal
detector and search anywhere than we can search, with permision from the land owner. So this is why
we want to let people know what our hobby is really about. We search on all kinds of land and when
we've finnished it is very difficult to see if we have been there at all. All holes are cut and lifted
not to damage any plant life and refilled with the surface remaining as it was. We do search common land
around our town (the local hills) and some people think this is a terrible thing to do, digging great
big holes everywhere and stealing their gold.Or thats what they seem to think as when ever we are
approached by anyone who feels we shouldn't be there will just argue that its not allowed ,without finding
out what we actually do. The finds here are about 90% bullet cases but they help fill the scrap bag.
All litter is taken away , none of which was taken there by us.That is usual on most searches so there
is 1 case of being an enviromently friendly hobby, what other Hobby offers that ?

As metal detector users we tend to look at the ground when searching so we can avoid treading on rare
plants and flowers as we go , so we are probably more enviroment friendly than someone just out for a
walk in the country taking in the view.

There are some people that would say metal detectorists and treasure hunters can only damage and destroy
the enviroment .But we disagree, as most of our hobby takes place in the countryside or on the beach
and sometimes under the water,we want to preserve it as much as possible. Almost everything we find
can be re-cycled obviously the modern coins we find are cleaned and then spent ,it helps pay for petrol
and batterys. The older coins are cleaned and added to our collections for others to see , also any of
the artifacts that come to light are cleaned and preserved and saved from distruction in the soil or
sea.
|

The other things we find can be any metal but most metals can be re-cycled and the scrap copper, brass, bronze
we find is taken once a year to the local scrap dealer and sold ,it might only earn about £20 from a
busy year but its better than throwing it back. Lead is re-cycled either by selling to the scrap dealer
or made into fishing weights. This is good insentive to remove this harmfull material from the ground
. Lead is very common and quite often found on the surface after ploughing on farm land where animals
could graze and swallow small amounts, not too healthy for them ! So we help keep the animals safe aswell
.

The most common find is probably coins other than junk, so we get a bit of a reward by cleaning and spending
those. The other artifacts and older more collectible coins we find add to our collections and our knowledge
of the area's we search. Also it is pretty good exercise walking for miles in the open air and digging
holes all day.
