MINELAB SOVEREIGN 'V' FISHER 1266XB |
I have selected various items from my finds box and done some in air test's shown here. The actual depths
in the ground differ quite a bit accourding to the conditions and detector being used. One machine may
be better in certain conditons than a machine that out performs it in the air test. Such as when I tested
the FISHER 1266XB against the MINELAB SOVEREIGN in the feild. I found signals with the Fisher and then
tried the same spot with the sovereign ,both machines set at about the same sensitivity and discrimination,
discovering that some signals that I found with the Fisher did not register with the Sovereign.
When digging all of these I found that it was always a piece of junk. The Fisher is not good
on rejecting iron , The Soveriegn is superb . I did not find any iron with this. When checking signals
I got with the Sovereign with the Fisher there were some that the Fisher did not give a good signal on
and I would probably have left these targets, some of which were items of interest at depth.
As an allround detector I would rate the Sovereign as one of the best I have used especially on the
beach , the Fisher is ok on dry sand but in the wet sand I found it unusable where as the Sovereign
excells here and always finds stuff ,winter or summer. All this being said both machines
are great to use in the right place for instance I found the Bronze Age Spear shown on our photo page's
with the Fisher at a depth of about 6" on a clean chalk site were the Fisher could be used at max. sensitivity
,maybe I would not have found this with the Sovereign. But on a beach site in Southern Europe I found
the Diamond Ring also shown on our photo page's.

FISHER 1266XB 'V' COMPASS XP RPO |
|
These two detectors are very different in their advantages over each other as you can see in the in-air
tests I carried out the Fisher far out does the Compass but with the Compass being far more up to dealing
with junk I have to say the Compass has more advantages over the Fisher. Living by the sea I am a regular
visitor to the local beaches and the Fisher is unuseable on wet sand although the depth on dry sand with
no junk about is exceptional quit often digging down several inches more than the compass could detect
to recover coins and other objects. The Compass on wet sand also has problems,if a hole is dugg and the
find not retrieved first time it does sometimes give false signals over the hole also depth is cut but
the machine is still very useable. I use the Compass with a 3" search coil and this is the best machine
I have ever used on junk sites and is also very good on small gold items, even broken rings and some gold
chains are detectable like this but depth is not great.

MINELAB SOVEREIGN 'V' MINELAB EXCALIBUR 800
I still use both these machines and each has their advantages over the other. The main differences being
that the Sovereign has "notch " discrimination and the Excalibur does not.The Excalibur is waterproof
to 250 ft and the Sovereign is not.The only real difference in performance I have found is that the Excalibur
can be used at a higher level of sensitivity than the sovereign without giving any false signals but
these are rare with either machine anyway and are normaly due to a large piece of iron within a short
distance from the search head , but not quite under it, another sweep over the area and the signal usually
disapears. The depth tests show that there is not much difference in air but the Excalibur 800 has a smaller
coil than the Sovereign, maybe the Excalibur 1000 with the larger coil will prove deeper.I prefer the
Excalibur 800 because I use it on a lot of junky sites and can get nearer the junk without rejecting
the good stuff with the junk.I tried a small 18k ring against a pair of iron plyers and was able to reject
the plyers on their own and the pick up the ring when placed within 2.5 "of the plyers. Very impressive
compaired to some detectors as most would reject both together or have to not reject the plyers to pick
up the ring. My favourite detector in this situation is the Compass XP PRO with a 3" search
coil I have found many items with this that most detectors have rejected because they lay buried so close
to junk. My favorite of all my detectors is the Excalibur 800 as I will use this in the water
when the time comes and i'm sure it will prove unbeatable, but if you only want a beach machine or land
detector the Sovereign would be just as good.
